Think It Do-Over: The Debut!
November 17, 2011
Unemployment can definitely be the pits. I’ve been unemployed for over a month. My source of income has been unemployment from the state of North Carolina (third time in three years), personal savings, and excess funds from my recent student loan.
I’ll be honest. I have many days that see me feeling like a “loser” or “lazy-ass bum.” How couldn’t I? My job is to find a job, and I’ve been unsuccessful so far.
That negative thinking stops now! Here’s the helpful little tool I’ve implemented for myself: The Think It Do-Over!
Today’s (and inaugural!) Think It Do-Over focuses on my thoughts on my job search. All it consists of is me taking a recurring negative thought and doing it over into a positive thought. I follow it with a brief explanation of what effect the do-over has on my thought pattern. The added side thought further enables me to think even more positively and productively as well and serves an application of what I’ve learned.
Think It: I’ll never find a job.
Do-Over: I’ll find a job as long as I stay dedicated to my job search.
Explanation: I’m focusing on the fabulous job I’ve done of updating my résumé and cover letters and scouring the Internet daily for job-source resources. That level of dedication is what it takes to find a job.
Side Thought: I will set a short-term goal of finding a job within 6 months. I will also make sure I write the goal down in a place where I’ll see it every day.
By doing over my negative thought, I’ve instantly realized that anyone can find a job, but it takes extreme dedication to the job-search process and goal-setting (among other things) for that to happen.
Think It Do-Over #1: Success!
